Faith Conservations - Divine Beauty

As a building of faith, in a city of faiths we are enthusiastic about exploring ways in which the stained-glass windows at Birmingham Cathedral can create opportunities for inter-faith dialogue.

The Feast, a inter-faith initiative in the Diocese of Birmingham holds regular Faith Conservations. We decided hold a special one-off event at the Cathedral and use the windows as a stimulus for conversation around faith and life in the city.

A beautiful, warm July evening allowed for the illuminated windows to provide a stunning backdrop to Faith Conservations - Divine Beauty. We were joined by Muslim, Sikh, Humanist, Buddhist and Christian guests and the evening was led by Canon Dr Andrew Smith, Director of Interfaith Relations and Honorary Canon of Birmingham Cathedral. Participants were encouraged to reflect on the windows with minimal background information regarding their Christian significance. A number of different discussions were then held amongst the group. The symbolism of colour, the portrayal of chains, facial expressions and the depiction of hands within the windows were subjects that held particular interest. Watch the film below to see a snapshot of responses..
