Early Morning Light by Revd Canon Andrew Lythall, Canon Precentor

Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!
Christians have always believed that worship is the source and summit of our common life together. To that end, every single day, worship is offered at Birmingham Cathedral to the glory of God. Prayer and worship, of course, know no boundaries of time or place, but it is a rare privilege to be able to pray in such a beautiful space as St. Philip’s.
One of my favourite things about being a member of the cathedral clergy team is that I get to be in the building early in the morning when it is very quiet, before visitors begin to arrive. It is a transcendent experience to sit and look at the rising sun streaming in through the windows at the East End, illuminating the vibrant colours and contours of the rich imagery within them. We are very fortunate indeed to possess such works of exquisite beauty at the cathedral, which illuminate both the building and our hearts, as we seek to encounter the living Christ in this holy place.
